Land Of The Uninhabited
This project is based on a book - Designer Communism: non-places as utopia by There are many separate themes in Designer Communism when I first read it, and I decided to focus on two themes in the text which are Wealth and Utopia.
I developed the themes in the text to emotions and utopia which are inspired by the sentence in the text “There is no time to linger; any time not spent hustling (for sales, for work, for opportunities) is time wasted.” I feel in these words the pressure of people in today's society and a sense of helplessness, submissiveness and numbness to this feeling.
Another two inspirations in the text are “Baudrillard famously argued that Disneyland was presented as imaginary in order to make us believe in the reality of the rest of the United States; in the same way, Spielberg's airport is presented as inauthentic, as a (non)place of waiting and suspension, in order to secure the authenticity of the America outside the terminal. The Baudrillardian resonances multiply when we reflect on the terminal building itself.” And “We are at our most free in the non-place, the atrium, the departure lounge, on the motorway.” I think these two passages give me a real sense of the pressure on people in today’s society and help them reflect on it.
